NECRONOMICON

"Also known as the Kitab Al-Azif.  Written by Abdul Alhazred around A. D. 700 in Damascus.  Translated by Theodorus Philetas into the Greek under the name Necronomicon.  Suppressed and burnt, copies extremely rare.  Olaus Wormius made a Latin translation 1228.  Two editions exist, a 15th century German blackletter edition and a 17th century Spanish.  The work was banned by Pope Gregory IX in 1232.  English translation by Dr. John Dee, was never published and exists only in fragmentary forms.  Copies exist at the British Museum, the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, in the Widener Library at Harvard, and at the Miskatonic University Library in Arkham.  Other copies reported to exist in the hands of private collectors.  Reading this book leads to terrible consequences."
