The
success of the elite mission behind enemy lines had boosted the troops' moral
considerably. Edwards knew it would
do nothing in the long run, for the Dragon just had way too many mechs.
The Davion units would do their best though to defend the facility...
The
Storm totally encompassed the base, and rain pounded every cockpit.
Visibility was nill, and pilots would rely on their enhanced visual
scanners rather than eyes to determine contacts.
Commander Edwards was on the battlefield once again.
His Battlemaster deployed on the front lines where the Kurita forces were
mostly likely to attack. His basic
strategy would be a defensive one. All
the mechs were dug in, and had huge sheets of armor mounted on their front.
The torso sections would still be allowed to twist, and holes were cut
and positioned to allow all weapons to clearly fire. The Fox's Mechwarriors waited passively in their cockpits
with engines powered down so as to not be detected by the enemy.
The storm intensified with many a pilot's legs tapping nervously at their
rudder pedals, that being the only unapparent sign of activity.
Then
they came... It was a brief rumbling at first, but grew louder and louder.
Edwards could barely make them out along the tree line.
Hundreds of missiles arced across the open field from out of the foliage.
Cover fire for the storming mechs. Edwards
opened his comm-link, "Alright boys, they're comin in, there comin in full
throttle, watch your targeting computer, let's not let any of 'em get past
us." The Battlemasters on
board comp
uter
identified the converging army. Ten
Lances consisting of Locusts, Wasps, Stingers, some Spiders, and a few Ostcouts
barreled down on the fortified positions of Davion.
The Kurita generals knew they would take losses, but once they broke
through the enemy lines, the Medium and Heavy Lances could engage, and the Light
Lances would wreak havoc inside their perimeter.
"Incoming!!!" Edwards heard a pilot
yell out over the main comline from a front line mech as initial explosions lit
up the darkness of night with a massive Fire in the Sky.
The battle had begun.
An entire lance was heading full speed directly in the path of Edwards' Battlemaster. "Fools..." he shook his head, as his right arm extended and unleashed a PPC. The burst stopped the mech cold, and the round buried deep into its center torso before exploding, blowing fiberous armor almost completely away to reveal the ammo treasure weakly hidden inside. The mech rocked for a second before toppling backward. He fired several more shots at the remaining three mechs, missing. In what only seemed like seconds the enemy was within range of close range weapons. Edwards let loose his PPC again with deadly caress, along with four medium lasers, and an SRM 6 pack. The weapons lanced out and all found there mark. When the smoke cleared, the Locust was a heap of rubble, smashed like a hammer against a porcelain vase. The Battlemaster was now overheating though...and his mech's power plant cut out temporarily leaving the metal giant lifeless like a marionette with its stings cut.
