The Combine troops invading Arture 4 were front-line units. These were warriors who had
seen extensive service in the Fourth Succession War. It is to their credit that they did
not panic outright at the news that Wolf's Dragoons had landed.
Few other military units in the Inner Sphere carried with them a reputation that would
cause even the most hearty mechwarrior's soul to wither. The Dragoons were known as the
ultra-elite, warriors whose skills were honed razor sharp. No one knew where they got
their stockpiles of advanced mechs and weapons, but the Dragoons fielded top-of-the-line
equipment, and knew how to use it. And now their fury was released upon the Combine
troops.
Natashia Kerensky, nestled inside her night-black Warhammer, ordered her troops, the 7th
company, to attack. The mechwarriors showed the Combine why they were also known as the
Wolff Spiders.
Natashia guided her mech into the fray, watching carefully as the first of her troops
engaged the enemy. Advancing along the Dragon's right flank, she saw weapons slamming into
the enemy mechs from the front, Nathasha's strike lances keeping the Combine mechs focused
on the diversionary attack. She swooped further to the right flank of the Combine lines,
then veered inwards. She triggered her PPC's, both boiling into the rear of a Shadow Hawk,
melting away tons of armor and causing the medium mech to stagger. Her troops added their
PPC's and missiles to the barrage. Combine mechs were reeling, falling, and exploding
across her line of vision. The plan was going well.
As the Dragon's right flank fell, confusion erupted in their lines as some warriors
turned to face the flanking Wolff Spiders. The front lines began collapsing, and the Dragoon
strike lances burst through the chaotic lines of the Combine forces. The Dragon had been
the attacker only moments ago, and it was incredible how quickly the tide had turned
against them. The Dragoons had unleashed their power with surgical precision.
Jamie Wolff studied the post-action reports and was pleased. Granted, the Combine had been
taken by surprise, and they still had many more troops on the planet, but the Dragoon's
counteroffensive was proceeding perfectly. The real problem had been in coordinating
strikes with the AFFC troops already on the planet. When Wendigo had been razed (it had
already become known as The City of Ashes), much of the Commonwealth communications
abilities had gone with it. Wolff had dropships playing the role of communications
satellites, stationed at various positions in orbit and relaying signals to make up for
Wendigos loss.
With the attack plan going well, Wolff allowed himself a moment of reprise. All of this
was, of course, mere prelude to what was to come. He knew what he was really doing was training
his troops, and others, like the AFFC, to be ready when they returned. "Will
we be ready when the Clans return?" he thought.
