Wallart's Lance watched from the high crags surrounding the Kurita dropship as the huge warship unloaded its 36 mechs. Realizing the futility of a direct assault alone, Wallart had his units fall back, where they rendezvoused with the second ground lance of White's Company. Mackall's Lance consisted of a Marauder, a Thunderbolt, a Griffin and a small but quick Wasp. The two lances took up hiding places along the path some of the invaders were expected to take. After nearly an hour of fitful waiting, part of the 2nd Regiment of the Kurita attack marched past the 2 silent lances. With their luck, it was an assault company, consisting of an Atlas and a Battlemaster among other heavy mechs. The group of 8 mechs lumbered by, and Wallart timed the attack perfectly.
The Locust and the Wasp zipped out of hiding while the Archer fired its 2 LRM packs at the huge Atlas. Both packs hit square in the back of the behemoth mech, and the resulting explosion shook rocks miles away. The 100 ton monster jerked forward slightly with the impact, then turned slowly as the smoke wisped off his rear armor. The other mechs also fired their long range weapons, and several auto-cannon fives, smaller LRM packs, and 3 PPC's streaked into the horrific Atlas to due what little damage they could. The lances were lucky as all 3 PPC's hit the right arm of the giant. The Davion forces moved out at a run to get in close with the other mechs. Then Wallart's Shadow Hawk and the Marauder from Mackall's lance squared off against the terrifying Atlas. The Atlas was THE most feared Mech of all, and the reason why became quickly apparent. The Davion Marauder streaked up the the stationary Atlas and ripped into it with both PPC's again. Both found their mark, but before the pilot could access the damage, the Atlas's dreaded AC-20 blew into the right torso of the Davion mech. The resulting explosion blew nearly the entire upper right portion of the Marauder away. Its arm and right torso were simply no longer there, and shredded remains of armor scattered for hundreds of feet. The Marauder barely had time to stumble backward before the rest of the Atlas's weapons flew. Most hit solid armor, but one large laser ripped through the open hole in the right torso and found auto-cannon ammunition. The Marauder's head blew straight up and fire exploded from the hole in the right torso. Smoke escaped through seams in the armor, which was mostly intact. But it was now a dead shell, for everything inside was gone.
