NO HOPE

BY: Deathstrike

Edwards braced himself behind one of the armored barricades and waited. Through the smoke and the beginning torrents of rain, he watched the Condors rip into the advancing infantry.  The tanks' flamers colored the sky orange as the infantry units scattered.  Flame that could burn a mech would totally atomize a human being, and that's just what happened.  The fire washed over the Kurita ground forces and bathed them in flame.  It was simple...first the men were there and then they weren't.  The infantry was being completely slaughtered by the tanks, and Edwards wondered why the Dragon had even bothered.

The tide changed, though, as the 5 heavy lances merged into the battle.  Tanks were blasted or missiled or even crushed underfoot by the towering mechs.  The remaining Davion mechs had fallen back almost to the factory.  It was no more than a half-mile behind them.  This was it.  If the Kuritas broke thru here it would be all over.  The Kurita light lances had been almost totally wiped out, but at the cost of half of his own.  He had maybe 6 lances left against the 5 advancing Kurita ones.  Added to maybe 2 surviving light lances, the odds were just slightly in the Dragons favor.

The Kurita mechs lumbered through the ongoing massacre of their men.  They had occupied the Davion tanks, and that's all that mattered.  As the Kurita mechs came closer, some LRM packs began to fire.  A few at first, but soon the sky was filled with the contrails of hundreds of the homing weapons.  Large lasers soon joined the barrage.  Edwards was firing his PPC into the mass of oncoming mechs when the armor plate he was hiding behind took a half dozen laser hits.  He heard "Watch it Capelli!!  Get behind something!  Oh Shit!" and craned his head in time to see an Archer explode into fragments.  Edwards saw another 2 of his line bloom into fire as they were charging into the Kurita forces.  The Draconis mechs reached the lines, and the factory's defenses joined in.  The oncoming lances were being held, but at horrific costs.  Just when it seemed that they might actually do it, 2 full Kurita assault lances joined the battle.

He grimaced as a Stalker blew a wounded Battlemaster, not unlike his own, apart.  The assault lances were butchering the wounded defenders.  As Edwards shot at an enemy Warhammer, he went white.  Shit, there was an Atlas coming up behind the assault lances.  It was over.  There was NO hope.  So when the same Atlas demolished the enemy Warhammer, he nearly tipped his mech over.
