NO GUTS, NO GLORY

The stars blurred past the space-crusier Tanis as it accelerated past light speed to stop at its cruising speed of 8 times the speed of light.  The small vessel raced through quadrant 336 of the Federated Sun's empire.  The border with the dreaded Draconis Combine was only .42 light years away, and that troubled Victor Toland.  House Kurita had been an adversary since the Succession Wars began, and this, the fifth succession war, had made them more bitter enemies than ever before.  The alliance pact with House Steiner had just been accepted, and the formal unification of their states was coming shortly.  Victor liked that, maybe these damn wars would end if we could unify.  He slowed the Tanis to .5 light speed, then to .1 as he began to enter orbit of Arture 4.  The shuttle was dispatched, and Toland was on the ground in just over an hour.

The planet was unremarkable, a barren, desert world with a small colonial population of 38 million.  However, the planet was one of the few that still had a working Battlemech armor facility.  That made it a very valuable world indeed, and as such was heavily fortified with Mechs and fighters.  He entered the Trader's Guild and requested to meet with the Guild Leader.  As he awaited the meeting, he pondered for a moment.  He wondered just how valuable the planet on which he stood was.  Would House Kurita try to take it?  It WAS only a short way from the border...   His question was answered by a blaring alert Klaxon.  "All warriors to their stations.  We are under attack.  This is not, repeat NOT a drill.  All pilots prepare for launch."  He hurried to the doorway in time to see several hundred fighter craft lance toward the sky in attack formation.  They quickly disappeared into the clouds, but in a few more moments the sky lit up with explosions.  Toland knew that if the attacking force was large, the fighters didn't have a chance to stop them.  But they could damage the dropships and, more importantly, the horrific Battlemechs the landing ships carried.  He was sure that by now hundreds of the huge Mechs were plummeting toward the surface aboard dropships.  And when they got here...he shuddered at the thought.
