Wallart
in his 55 ton Shadow Hawk was now facing the dreaded 100-ton Atlas, which
towered over him. He fired a volley
of futile weapons at the Atlas's front armor.
He saw the Atlas targeting him with the Autocannon, and jumped just as
the projectile caught him in the leg. The
slug pealed armor off like playing cards, and knocked out his foot actuator.
Wallart got on the comm-line, "Storm, get over here and torch this
sucka!" "On my way,"
came Storm's reply.
The
Locust maneuvered in and out of the other huge mechs engaged on the battlefield.
Each taking shots at him as he ran by.
All missing though because Jason Storm is Hard to Kill.
He came upon the backside of the Atlas...the Atlas distracted, still
trying to pick off Wallart in the sky. The
Locust had a newly mounted weapon in place of its machine guns, & some
external armor; the Star Core Heat Blast brought about from the Davion/Steiner
alliance. By channeling power from
the Locusts’ fusion plant, the weapon could expel a beam of intense flame
toward an enemy mech. With any luck
the enemy’s internal temperature would increase so drastically that the heat
sinks would not compensate fast enough. The
Locust, point blank flankside the Atlas, fired!
The Atlas expended no movement for several minutes as its internal
systems burned in exhaustion. During
which time Wallart's Jump Jets were giving out, he came down, death from above
on top the Atlas with a direct hit on the upper torso section.
Its head crompactedä, leaving
only the now distorted shoulder armor protruding into the wind.
Another AC20 round flew through the air from across the field...burrowing
itself into the Shadow Hawks already damaged leg.
Toppling from 30 meters, Wallart’s command Mech fell, taking yet more
damage to its other leg. No actuators left, the Hawk would never stand again, and to
ensure its downfall, a rifleman came up and pummeled lasers into the center
torso until it exploded into a heap of debris.
Wallart
had ejected though, along with Storm of the lifeless Locust.
The Star Core heat blast was a very ingenious weapon, but not without an
unwanted side effect. The magnetic
containment fields around the Locust’s core overheated causing an abrupt
shutoff of its own reactor. All in
all, a good thing, for it did not cause an explosion, it did however wreak the
reactor. When the conflict was over, assuming they won, a salvageable
power plant from another wreaked battlemech might be able to replace it.
Either way, both men hoped one day they might again pilot another
battlemech!
The
Battle waged on...
