Five and Nine had been left behind as their mercenary company’s dropship
hastily rocketed skyward departing Twycross...Five had been point spotting
targets from the air for Nine in his battlemech on the ground...The radio
chatter between the two mates had ceased however, and Nine hadn’t been able to
raise his comrade for several minutes now...he presumed him destroyed or
inoperable...
Angel
Nine was on his own now... He knew his small sized, 40-ton Hermes II wouldn’t
last long against the new Kurita adversaries - or whoever they were.
Their gargantuan metal hulks were unlike any mech he had ever scene and
their shear size and immense fire power contributed to a one sided battle.
To his left he saw a Davion Hatchetman desperately trying to hack at the
armored skin of an Imperial Scout Walker. Its
bonnet finally giving way, just as an AT-AT’s turbo lasers drilled into its
right arm and torso multiple times. Its
mechanized extremity holding the colossal axe seemed to bob up and down as the
elastic myomer stretched and contracted involuntarily before snapping and
finally falling to the muddy ground.
The
All Terrain Armored Transport fired at another group of battlemechs and then
sent another volley again at the Hatchetman all in a matter of seconds.
The resulting heat build up caused the mech's power plant to implode.
The blossoming fireball and shockwave that followed strained his gyros to
keep balance as if the impact was to his own mech.
He
swallowed hard as the Hermes' cockpit was peppered with the laser fire from an
assailant he was unable to distinguish through the chaos reigning on the
battlefield. Monitors and control
panels around him exploded sending fragments of glass and plastics into his
vulnerable body. Without the aid of
computers, the pilot instinctively tried to break into a full speed run.
No response. He activated the torso twist, and swiveled around 360’ to
get a manual look at his surroundings. Three
AT-AT walkers were coming right at him. He
flipped all the triggers on his joystick. No power to the weapons.
He threw a few more levers to channel the emergency power.
He
would have only one shot at glory.
The
Hermes II did not muster a lot of weapons, but it did come stock with an AC/5
Ultra - a deadly accurate small munitioned autocannon even at long range.
He took aim and fired while focusing his Rage Against The Machines
bearing down on him. The shot bore
into the anterior head section of an AT-AT.
It blew clean off, and black smoke bellowed out of the hole that was
left. The behemoth teetered for an
instant before crashing down itself.
Another shower of lasers coated Angel 9’s front armor from the other two AT-ATs, and heat indicators rose to critical. The front interior walls of the cockpit burst inward sending large razor sharp shards of metal into his leg severing it almost completely. Blood spewed forth like a geyser spraying what was left of the starred canopy and control panels. He fought the cold feeling of pain as he struggled to inject himself with the morphine synthetic...it was of course all to no avail. Another hail of laser fire, subsequent transient heat energy buildup and his mech imploded as well adding to the pyre of carnage on the planet's surface.
