HEAT WAVE

BY: Deathstrike

As the colossal battle continued around the armor factory, the rain began to let up again. That was good news, because a break in the rain meant another fighter run soon. Wallart unleashed the now-legendary AC-20 into the damaged right torso of a Crusader and it flared into oblivion as the auto-cannon found the Dragons missile ammo. Edwards was unloading his remaining weapons into a fresh Phoenix Hawk. As the impact of the Battlemaster's weapons sent the measly 45 ton mech reeling backwards, an SRM launcher scratched the surface of the armor on his center torso. He turned and saw a 5 man infantry group reloading a hand-held launcher. All Edwards could spare was his machine guns, but it was more than sufficient to massacre the pitiful footsoldiers. Their blood stained the muddy ground and body parts were blown in every direction as the 80 mm shells shredded the unfortunate men. He turned back to find another Awesome plodding up to him. As Edwards desperately tried to dodge, the Kurita mech fired its 2 remaining PPCs into his already damaged center torso. The energy beams blew through the rest of his armor and incinerated 2 of his engines. The Battlemasters internal heat was already above the red zone, and the loss of the engines caused a surge of heat that instantly shut his mech down. Steam poured from the mechs heat sinks as they tried vainly to dissipate the enormous amounts of heat. All Edwards could do was stare in horror at his screen as the Awesome began to re-aim its PPC's. He snarled at the enemy mech and breathed "come on, you fuckin bastard. I offed at least 20 of your buddies today...so do it. I'll see you in hell..."

His whisper trailed off to silence as he saw Wallart's Atlas come charging up and blindside the Kurita shithole. The Awesome's armor crushed like tin foil and the entire right half of the mech crumbled. It flew over 20 feet before smashing into the wet ground, and an instant later the Atlas landed on top of it. Wallart stood and looked down at the mangled mass of armor that had once been an enemy mech, then turned to chuckle at Edwards' inert Battlemaster. "Seems like bailing you outta trouble is becoming a full time job." Edwards looked around at the carnage he had helped create. There had to be at least 100 mech carcasses littering the battlefield, but it was over. They had won. "For now." he corrected himself. A squad of fighters streaked by above him to ensure that even the Kurita's retreat would cost them dearly.
