DEATH FROM ABOVE

BY: Gladiator

Aerospace fighters swooped down dropping clusters and clusters of bombs and fragmentation warheads.... smoke pored out... hundreds off flashes erupted...and resulted in a chaotic and wild frenzy of mech movement on the battlefield...The orgy of chatter over the commline was overwhelming, and Edwards could not coordinate his troops.

Panic surmounted as the smoke screen worsened....he was tempted to begin firing blindly into the clouds of vapor and dust.  Computers were not responding, and some type of jamming interference had his targeting system down.

The smoke began clearing, and suddenly rage turned to utter horror as Edwards was face to face with a massive Overlord class dropship as landed in front of him.  Mechs began pouring out of the colossal bay doors... an abundant array of medium and heavy attack mechs, fast and mobile. The damned Dracs were determined to destroy them that was certain.

The ugliness of the catastrophe he was about to witness could only be worsened when the batteries aboard the drop ship began to open up.  The rapid-fire gun ports began a bloodbath that was becoming the all to often aftermath of Inner Sphere combat.  His sides assortment of mechs couldn’t possibly muster enough firepower to damage the giant assault craft....and added to the blossoming fury, the dropships assault class mechs began picking targets and mowing down their foes as well.

Edwards knew his forces didn’t have a chance.

He would go out fighting though with an honorable warrior’s death.

He had his computer target a ‘Banshee’ a 95-ton mech as big as his own and began to move toward it.  He could now see a ring of Warhammers moving equidistantly away from the dropship like an atomic blast’s shockwave.  Their siege so devastatingly swift...the mech pilots were undoubtably elite and bore the mark of veteran soldiers.

He knew it was a futile attempt to thwart off this attack, but he forced his actuators to full and powered up the engines to maximum.

“No guts, no Glory!” he said aloud and prepared to fire on the enemy....as he neared the massive drop ship, his fear turned to utter dismay as he looked upon the emblem displayed along the backside of the dropship.  A red circle outlining a black fanged wolf.

These were not Kurita units after all.

Wolf’s Dragoons had arrived, and the Black Widow was with them.

Now the tactic employed before him became clear...  the fighters had dropped massive amounts of smoke charges to mask the Descent of the dropship.  The emergence of the craft on ground zero of the disorganized melee was a very gusty strategy indeed...and no doubt the combined skills of a well versed pilot and seasoned battle commander.

As the haze began to dissipate around Edwards' Battlemaster, he could see uncountable numbers of dropships falling in the distance.

Edwards' face displayed a queer smile.  The first time he’d smiled in a great long while.  Today would see the Combines’ demise...they would be prey to a hopeless slaughter, like a herd of sheep, to a pack of ravenous wolves!!
