FORTY TWO AND EIGHT

BY: GLADIATOR

The one and only James T. Kirk strode proudly down the Corridor of his starship.  The legendary USS Enterprise hung deeply silhouetted against the blackness of space.  Her crew had performed gallantly, facing overwhelming odds in the War of the Greys, but it was now time for a greatly needed period of R&R.  The timeline was back to normal, but for most of the crew, memories were still fresh in their minds of the battle of all battles.  The Greys had had control over many of his crew, and remnants of their abduction tales would remain with them forever.

All this, not to mention the condition of the ship's hull.  It was so badly damaged, She would be dry docked for months.  If it wasn't for his adept chief engineer, they might not make it back to space dock under their own power at all.  When Mr. Scott got word Starfleet was sending out a tow, he worked his staff night and day until they were ready to make the long Star Trek home.  For Kirk though, his duties were not over.  In fact, he was just on his way now to a meeting with his chief officers.  He rounded the corner and entered the briefing room.

Everyone was already engaged in conversation.  Spock, Scotty, Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura.  He greeted them all as he strolled to his seat.  Where was Bones?  He talked with the Doctor late into the evening last night over some brandy.  He knew how important this meeting was going to be.  The box from Hyuj sat in the middle of the oblong conference table.  Dr. McCoy finally entered, and looked like a man who hadn't slept in days.  Jim didn't think they had drank that heavily.  He was about to say something to his friend, but McCoy mouthed quietly "later."  Kirk called the meeting to order.

"Well Gentlemen," he nodded to Uhura, "we have two hot topics to discuss today.  As you already are aware, we are in orbit around a class M planet, which is to say the least very unique.  We also have our…gift."  Kirk made a gesture with his hands at the box on the desk.  "Mr. Spock," Kirk addressed the Vulcan.  "What can you tell us about this box from Hyuj?"

Spock unsteepled his hands.  "I have analyzed it thoroughly Captain, and it is indeed Alien."  "Well of course it's Alien you halfwit!" McCoy broke in.  "C’mon Bones, let him finish."  Kirk turned back to Spock.  The Vulcan, unfazed by the doctor’s outburst continued on.  Through great lengths I have used a complex mathematical algorithm to unlock the box.  I believe you will find what's inside very fascinating."  Spock entered the code from his computer terminal and the box opened.  "It better be good," Scotty chimed.  He was already under the gun getting the ship up and running, and Spock demanded 42% of the entire power reserve just to run his computations.  Everyone gathered round Spock's end of the table to peer into the box.  "IT'S BEAUTIFUL!" Uhura gasped.  Inside, row upon row of colored crystals came to life.

 ffffffffuuuuuwwwwweeeeeeeeaaaaaaaa (intercome whistle)

The ship's intercom buzzed the conference room.  "Bridge to Captain Kirk, another energy burst is emanating from the planet.  It's 336 times the intensity as the first wave....."

 WWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHH

The conference room swirled around them all.  It's the end of every life on Earth.  Bones thought he heard whale song.  Kirk opened his eyes, and was amazed.  They were no longer in the conference room.  Around him were his friends, but around them all was a vast jungle.  It was hot, sticky, and he was already perspiring.  The lush vegetation around them thrived in the humidity and acted like a blanket of heat.  "Is everyone all right?" Kirk called out.

Spock, already on his feet was helping up the other crew members.  Sulu eyed a small fern with interest.  "Mr. Spock, what just happened?" But before Kirk could get an answer, the ground rumbled.  The rumbling was getting louder and louder and distinct thuds could now be recognized.  "Captain, I suggest we heed the situation, and take cover." "Hell of an idea!" McCoy was already heading towards a cluster of plants.  Ahead of them a few hundred meters the trees parted and gave way.  "A dinosaur!" someone whispered.  The animal charged forward as if on a hunt.  It looked right at Kirk and roared into the dimly lit sky.  Kirk looked down at himself and to the others beside him.  Even in the thick brush, the bright colored clothing they had on certainly wasn't camouflage.  Kirk's hands instinctively went to his belt.  No phaser, damn.  The trees parted again up ahead to reveal an even larger dinosaur.  This one Kirk recognized.  From his history books he knew it to be known as the Tyrant lizard, or Lizard King.  The Tyrannosaurus gained quickly on the slower animal it was chasing.  The howls and bellows from the two deafened the crew of the Enterprise.  They were almost on top of them when the Rex pounced his prey.  Within seconds the smaller dinosaur was down and the T-Rex thundered off.

"Fascinating!" Spock commented, "it killed for sport."

With the spectacle taking place in front of them, they failed to notice immediately, the small monkey creature hiding in the vegetation next to them.  The small humanoid took off running, and so did the crew.

"Don't let it get away!" Kirk yelled as he ran.  After a couple minutes, the extra pounds Kirk put on from blowing off McCoy’s workout regimen were showing.  Luckily Chekov pushed past him.  Unlucky for Chekov however, his foot got caught up in some sort of rope trap, and he was now hanging upside down by his ankle.

"McCoy....stay...with....Chekov!" Kirk could hardly breathe as he ran on.  Spock was passing him now too, and at last they had the monkey boy trapped.  It ran into a tri-angular constructed monument.  Kirk and Spock entered and to their dismay found a SLEESTACK!  How could this be? Kirk thought to himself.  The Sleestack had its back to them and was working a pedestal full of colourful crystals which glowed luminously despite the darkness of the surrounding chamber.  The same type of crystals that were in the box from Hyuj!  In the far wall a misty haze gave way to a sort of window through the hard stone.  He recognized some of the images as that of his Starfleet Academy days.  Then, the scene changed to that of the Enterprise, and to the bridge crew in the conference room.  Something wasn't right.  Wasn't he just there?  Suddenly, at least one thing was clear.  The box from Hyuj must obviously be a sort of dimensional gateway, or more simply, a time machine.
